False Cape State Park, VA
Located just south of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, False Cape State Park is an isolated paradise nestled between Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina state line. Because of its limited accessibility, FCSP offers a unique opportunity to explore nature in an unspoiled coastal environment, both on the Atlantic oceanfront and on the bay side. After setting camp, we'll explore the rich ecological diversity around us - the shorelines, dune-fields, maritime oak-pine forests and marsh habitats. Camping, hiking, paddling, beachcombing, star gazing, fishing, nature photography and wildlife observation are some of the activities we can enjoy during our stay.
This trip is a great way to experience "expedition kayaking" without having to travel a great distance. Some of the topics we'll discuss include: packing the kayak, on-water & on-land navigation, safety, and group communication.
This event can easily be "customized" to meet your group's desires!
Prerequisite: absolutely none
Time: 9:00 AM on first day - 4:00 PM on second day
Cost: $150, includes kayaks/canoes, paddling gear & meals
Dates: 5/3-4, 5/24-25
Lake DrummondYour paddling trip starts at the 3.5 mile feeder ditch along old Rte.17. We will have a guide along who can relate the history, tall tales, botany and biology of this magical place. Surrounded for years by myth and legend, very few people have ever seen Lake Drummond - the beautiful centerpiece of this National Wildlife Refuge. We will visit the canal built in the 1700’s by crews of George Washington. Join us for a trip back through history as you learn about the Native Americans who lived here, the Colonial Americans’ and modern industrial influences, and the path by which the U.S. Government through The Nature Conservancy came to own this national treasure. This trip should be on every paddlers "life list".
Time: 9:00 AM on first day - 4:00 PM on second day
Cost: $150.00, includes kayaks/canoes, paddling gear & meals
Dates: 4/26-4/27
Hertford, NC B & BHistoric Hertford, NC, once home to the Algonquin Indians, is a picturesque community nestled on the banks of the Perquimans River. With a put-in near the center of town, we'll paddle past the only "S" shaped swing bridge in the nation. While this is primarily a paddling adventure, we'll have ample time to do some antique shopping, take a self-guided walking tour through downtown - and certainly stop in for an old fashioned 50-cent hand-dipped ice cream at the corner drug store! A paddle up the Perquimans River (or a short drive) to the historic 1730 Newbold-White House is also an option.

Merchants Mill Pond, NC
Escape the hectic pace of life and find solitude in an "Enchanted Forest" setting. Drift idly along the smooth, dark surface of the millpond and savor the many sights and sounds that come alive in the stillness of the forest. The 760 acre millpond is more than 180 years old and has developed into a complex, mature ecosystem. Numerous species of aquatic plants such as floating yellow cow lily and the submerged parrot feather thrive on the pond. A red and green layer of floating duckweed, water fern and liverworts often cover the water's surface. Moved by wind and current, these floating mats create a changing mosaic of colors and patterns.
We'll meet Saturday morning and pack and launch our kayaks for the beautiful paddle across the millpond toward our island campsite. Along the way we'll see a variety of wildlife including turtles, geese, ducks.... and may possibly sight some of the beaver, otter and alligators that make their home here! Once we establish camp, we'll further explore this truly remarkable area by kayak. Following dinner we'll take a night paddle amongst the Spanish moss covered cypress and tupelo gum trees.
Prerequisite: absolutely none
Duration: 3 days, 2 nights
Cost: $175.00, which includes kayaks, paddling gear & meals
Dates: please call for dates
Did you know? There are four alligators living in Merchants Millpond.

Cape Lookout, NC
This is a 3-day, 2 night, self supported primitive camping trip. Putting-in at the Cape Lookout Visitors Center on Harkers Island, NC, we'll paddle across Back Sound to establish our campsite on the southeastern tip of Shackleford Banks. From our base camp we'll take day trips to venture around Lookout Bight toward the Atlantic side of Core Banks. Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a short paddle across Barden Inlet - an easy day trip to enjoy the Atlantic surf.
Nine-mile long Shackleford Banks is home to 128 wild ponies that roam the dunes and marshes and swim the small channels between the island and the nearby tidal flats. It's quite common for the ponies to wander near our campsite, where they can be observed from a safe distance.
This is a great introduction to expedition type paddling where wind, waves, weather, tides and current must be considered.
Prerequisite: Although prior sea kayaking experience is not required, participants should be in sound physical condition and be able to paddle for 3-4 hours at a time.
Duration: 3 days, 2 nights
Cost: $325.00, which includes kayaks, paddling gear & meals
Dates: call for dates
